BIO
Beatrice Findlay in her Brooklyn Studio
Beatrice Findlay has been merging abstraction with figuration in varying degrees and combinations for decades. While at first glance her paintings may appear purely abstract, closer examination reveals the presence of figures or landscapes. Through the use of multiple layers of paint, impasto, and a rich and varied palette, Findlay creates radiant surfaces that invite reflection on life energy, the duality of body and spirit, presence and absence. Described as possessing a Zen-like quality, Findlay’s work captures a dynamic sense of motion within a tranquil space, embodying a unique tension between activity and stillness. Her art transcends simple representation, offering viewers a meditative space to explore complex emotional and philosophical themes.
Based in Brooklyn, New York, Findlay’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions across North America and internationally. Her work is held in over 150 public and private collections, including Palm Springs Desert Museum (Palm Springs CA), Springfield Museum of Art (Springfield OH), Goodwin Procter (Boston MA), Cedars Sinai (Los Angeles CA), Alliance Bernstein (New York), and the Pudong Shangri-La (Shanghai China). Solo exhibitions include the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Joslyn Museum (currently the Torrance Art Museum, Torrance CA), Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY), Fordham University at Lincoln Center (New York) Gallery Atrium (Stockholm, Sweden), and a traveling exhibition across four museums in Poland. Findlay’s commissioned works have been created for individuals and organizations across three continents, reflecting her interest in cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration. Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, she holds a BFA from the University of Manitoba and has studied independently in Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles and New York. Immigrating to the United States in 1976, Findlay holds dual citizenship.
